In our specialised Feeding Therapy Program, we are committed to addressing a range of feeding challenges faced by children. Our evidence-based approach, the SOS Approach to Feeding, is tailored to meet the unique needs of each child, encouraging not just improvement in feeding techniques but also a positive relationship with food.
We leverage exploratory play to gently introduce children to a wide range of foods, encouraging curiosity and acceptance through sensory engagement with various textures, smells, and tastes.
Our program includes targeted activities designed to enhance the coordination and strength of the tongue, lips, and jaw. These fine motor games are crucial for improving the child’s ability to manage different food textures efficiently.
We provide comprehensive support and practical modelling to teach children how to effectively use utensils, manage their meals, and independently handle various aspects of eating, from navigating their plates to using cups.
Our therapists guide children through the process of concluding a meal, offering strategies and modelling behaviours to signal meal completion comfortably.
Mealtimes and feeding can often be a challenge for children with autism or developmental delays. Part of our integrated approach at the CDI is to ensure children have the skills to consume a healthy range of foods and get the nutrition they need to thrive.
Markus, a 4-year-old with limited solid food intake and an aversion to wet and cold textures, exemplifies the success of our Feeding Therapy Program. Initially reliant on milk for caloric needs and resistant to trying new foods at daycare, Markus faced significant feeding challenges. However, through our play-based approach and targeted feeding strategies, significant breakthroughs were achieved:
At CDI, we are dedicated to transforming eating habits and encouraging a love for food in children facing feeding difficulties. Our specialised Feeding Therapy Program offers a blend of best practices, experienced therapists, and a child-centered approach to ensure that every child, like Markus, can enjoy a diverse diet and the many joys of eating.
The first clinic will include a thorough assessment of:
Markus is a 4 year old boy who commenced Feeding Clinics at the CDI due to poor oral motor skills, aversion to wet and cold textures and limited repertoire of solid foods.
Markus had up to 6 bottles of milk each day to ensure he had enough caloric intake. He also refused to eat any food offered at childcare.
Using the play-based approach to feeding, our therapist has been able to teach Markus to move food more efficiently in his mouth, provide Markus with strategies to independently manage his aversion to wet textures and expose Markus to a wider variety of foods.
After attending feeding clinics for 12 weeks, Markus is more willing to try new foods at home and at day care.
